I spent all day yesterday thinking I was having a dinner party today. In reality where time apparently moves linearly, the dinner party is tomorrow— a fact that came as a surprise to me, a person whose brain processes time like a game of ping pong. Good thing I asked this morning.
As an introvert, cancelled or delayed plans are always a welcome surprise and an opportunity to hunker down with a cozy dinner at home. What’s more cozy than the classic Smitten Kitchen recipe one-pan farro with tomatoes? Very little in my opinion. It will use up our freshly pulled onions and garlic, the sungold tomatoes ripening en masse, vegetable stock from the freezer, and basil that will flower and become bitter if I don’t cut it soon. I think I’ll throw in some grated zucchini and frozen corn too because Summer. Pecorino on top, of course.
If I’m being very honest, I haven’t been cooking with onions much lately because I’ve been putting off a date with my whetstone. A dull knife makes for a lot of tears around alliums! And oh boy, are we rich in alliums from the garden; E grew leeks, scallions, red onions, yellow onions, shallots AND two types of garlic this year. So that’s my task for this afternoon: Fiona Apple on the speaker, a cold mocktail, and blade sharpening.
